Last month I had the bright
idea to finally get down to Houston to visit some friends that I haven't seen
in way too long. Josh was going to be in North Carolina for a conference
so I figured I'd have more fun there meeting lots of new babies and eating with
friends at all the restaurants I have been missing. We loaded up half of
the house and were on our way! The girls did awesome in the car on the
three hour trip. They actually slept and were happy and quiet! When
we got there, we went to a really fun place called Wonder Wild in the Heights
right by where we used to live. They had tons of bouncy things, slides,
playhouses, etc. We met some of my favorite friends I used to teach with
and their kiddos for a fun play date.
We loaded up to head over to
my friend Annesa's house, where we were going to stay. Going to stay,
being past tense. As I was getting Caroline out of the car she felt like
an oven. I thought maybe she was just hot from playing, so I made her
dinner. She didn't touch it...so not Caroline. Annesa had an adult
thermometer and I took her temp under her arm. It was 102! I
figured that that meant that with the right kind of one it was 103!!
Annesa was still under the 12 week pregnancy benchmark and I knew we needed to
get out of there asap. She was telling me her ears and mouth hurt.
I called our awesome Dr. back home and he said Strep was going around as well
as the stomach bug. I prayed and hoped that it was the first since the
last time I went to stay with Annesa, Lila threw up everywhere!!! What is
the deal?
I called and got us a hotel
by the galleria that I knew had a pull out and room service! Our Dr.
called in a script and we left. By this point Caroline was screaming and
looked like a super sicky version of herself.
Over the next THREE hours we
drove back and fourth all over Houston. We went to the pharmacy (script
not ever ready and insurance card missing), to a baby gift shop on the other
side of town to get the lovie that I had forgotten at home (later to find at
the bottom of my bag), back to the pharmacy (where my car died from
overheating), finally back across town to the hotel. By the time we
got to the valet we were a hot mess!! It was so humbling. Like God
was saying, "You have two kids. You can't be superwomen. You
need help sometimes!" After crying to the nice bellman who unloaded
all of our stuff, we got a call from Josh. He had been sitting at the
airport for 7 hours and his flight got cancelled! He drove back to Waco
and I ordered a glass of wine and a giant meal from room room
service.
The next morning, when we
were all home, all we could do was laugh at our failed attempt of a weekend
:) Two days later Lila got sick and had a confirmed case of Strep.
Having kids, you never know what might happen!
