Craziest Week Ever

Oh my...where to start??  This past week was one for the record books.  Once upon a time in a land called Austin a Mommy went for a nice relaxing night away from her family to enjoy a spa day with a girlfriend.  While she was there, she got a call that her daughter had another Staph spot show up on her bottom.  Not to worry.  This was in fact the third time she had gotten an infected spot and Mommy and Daddy knew just what to do.  Call the dr. for meds, soak in really hot water several times a day, wash with surgical strength soap, cover with a band-aid and wait for it to open up.  Only this time it didn't follow the rules.

We went in to see our wonderful doctor, Dr. Nesmith, or Dr. Willy  as the cool kids call him and he had to lance it.  We had done this one time before and let me tell you, not sure there is anything worse!  We basically hold her down, wide awake, while he cuts her open and drains the sore!!!!!  You can imagine how fun that is as a Mommy :(  Thankfully, it was going to get better...

...only, it didn't.  Over night it went from something the size of a pea to an infection the size of a softball. The tiny spot had turned into cellulitis and was a giant area of infected tissue. It was literally growing as you watched.  The meds couldn't keep up with it.  We went back to see him Tuesday and were sent to the hospital.  Say what?!?!  Thank the Lord my sister knew I would be panicking and came to meet me.  She took Caroline, so Josh and I could deal with Lila.  What amazing servants my family is!!  Knowing Caroline was taken care of, made the whole stay that much easier.  Thank you!!!!

To shorten a really long story... Many needle pricks and iv antibiotics later, we got to come home.  Sweet sick little thing :(

About the hospital :
  • I've never prayed so much in my life
  • We have amazing friends around us supporting us!!
  • Nurses don't get paid enough
  • My heart aches for the kids who are there all the time
  • I loath the breast pump
  • I hope to never go back!

By Saturday we knew it still had some shrinking to do, but we were so glad to be home and decided to watch Miss Ally play her first T ball game with the family. So precious!

I have never seen a kid so happy to run around as Lila was that day!   We played all day with all the cousins. Having a quick egg hunt!

Ok, crazy again!  That night at bath time, we saw that the spot was hard again!  We talked with the Dr. and decided to go to the emergency room.  While the company at Providence ER on a Saturday night at 10 pm wasn't the most enjoyable, the procedure was relatively quick.  They saw that there was a pocket of puss that the meds couldn't reach.  The dr.  (Dr. Pepper to be exact) sedated her with ketamine, I think I'm spelling that right?  I went out in the hall.  Couldn't stand to see her like that.  The Chris Tomlin song, " and if our God is for us, then who could ever stop us" kept running through my head and I just prayed. Josh stayed in and said they couldn't believe the amount of puss they got out of her sweet bottom!!  Can you imagine how much that had to hurt...sitting, walking, yuck!

So... we got home about 2am Easter morning.  Thanks to Honey for watching sweet Caroline!  About 9:30 Easter morning, a very weary Lila woke up to open her Easter basket.  Good as new.  She still had the packing in her hinney, but seemed 100% better.  Praise the Lord!!!

A new car for the princesses to ride in!

 Two Easter Bunnies:)

We got up and around and went over to my parents to join the family for lunch.  I dressed the girls in their new church dresses because, look how cute!

The boys had all changed, so here's just the girls with Honey and GP.

The 3 c's!

After lunch Lila got to go first to hunt eggs!

So happy to see that smiley face again!!

As always, we had a blast with our BIG cousins :)

On Monday we used a lot of this at our house to try to free it from staph germs.

Every surface, toy, couch, bed, etc...was cleaned.  Here is some toys getting a bleach bath :)

To answer your questions:

  • No, we don't know why Lila keeps having trouble with these.  They say about 80% of people have staph on them and some are more sensitive to it than others
  • No, she isn't contagious after the wound has healed.
  • Yes, there are some preventative things we can try to do.  Like bleach baths, change the sheets daily (ha) when she has a sore,  and put an ointment in our noses.
Sorry for the length of this post, but that's what we've been up to :)

Friend! I am so behind, and had gotten an update via both of your sisters about this.

First off, Dr. Pepper? What? That poor child woke up one day and wanted to be a soda drink. :-)

I have a neighbor who has similar staph problems with her child. That sounds horrible!

Jay had a really good talk about going to the Lord as a refuge through times such as these last Sunday. I'll send you the link when they upload it.

Sounds horrible, all of it, but so glad she is okay now and so glad you have family in town to take care of Caroline!
